Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy designed to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It focuses on how OCD is driven not just by anxiety, but by a pattern of doubt and faulty reasoning that can pull you away from what you actually know to be true and right. Instead of trusting your direct experience and thoughts, OCD creates “what if” scenarios that feel convincing, leading to intrusive thoughts and urges to perform compulsions.

I-CBT can be helpful in treating OCD by helping you understand how these doubt-based stories take hold in your mind and how they differ from reality. In therapy, you can learn to identify the reasoning processes that fuel your obsessions and practice new ways of thinking. Rather than relying on reassurance or rituals, the work focuses on reconnecting with your own sense of certainty and trusting yourself again. This can reduce the need for compulsions and lessen the intensity of intrusive thoughts over time.

The goal of I-CBT is not just symptom management, but helping you relate to your thoughts differently so they have less power over you. As you begin to recognize how OCD operates, you can respond with more clarity and confidence.
